Kannawa Onsen is a traditional Japanese steam bath located in the Kannawa district of Beppu, Ōita Prefecture. Renowned for its unique herbal steam therapy, it offers a distinctive wellness experience rooted in centuries-old practices.
At Kannawa Steam Bath, guests lie on a bed of medicinal herbs, primarily sekisho (Japanese sweet flag), within a stone hut heated by natural geothermal steam. This method, dating back to the Kamakura period (1185–1333), is believed to promote detoxification, improve circulation, and alleviate ailments such as headaches and muscle tension.
The steam bath is separated by gender and accommodates up to four individuals at a time. Each session lasts approximately 8 to 10 minutes, during which the enveloping steam induces profuse sweating, leaving the skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
